There are few performances that are more revealing of an artist’s true skill than an acoustic set. No distortion pedals, synth sounds, or other extraneous effects to muddle the music that’s being created. Every single note and ounce of rhythm is out in the open with nowhere to hide. In my mind, an acoustic set is what separates the men from the boys. It’s music in its purest form, you’ve either got the skills to pull it off or you don’t.

Read our full review of Josh Gilbert's "Live Tracks & Acoustic Sessions" after the jump

By Chris Brach

When we last heard from Jettison Never we had just finished reviewing one of the smoothest, fast paced albums this side of the unsigned artist world. Through their signature harmony and unique musical blend, Jettison Never provided an unmistakable identity and sound on their debut album “They Fall From Heaven Unassembled”. The guys from Jettison mastered their craft so well that their song “Chemical” took home the top honors as our Best Rocksposed Song of 2009. So how would they follow up such a solid debut record? We took their newly released “Waiting for Apparitions” for a spin to find out.

Follow the link for the full review!

There’s a brand of rock for every taste, but if I had to pick my poison, I’ve always gravitated towards a heavy, driving, edgy rock song more than any other. If it’s loud with a dash of frantic or angry pace to it, then sign me up, I’m interested. The guys from 3 Years Hollow subscribe to the same rock preference, and they successfully modeled their sound to fall in line accordingly.

Read our full review of 3 Years Hollow's album "Ascension" at Rocksposure.com

Two songs left, nothing pressing, I pulled into my parking space, killed the engine, and sat in my car until new album “Go-Go Boots” finished.

Then I said to myself, “This is the best band in America.” .........

Read the rest of the review at Rocksposure.com

Their music is aggressive, clean, heavy as hell, and ready to rock on their recently released album “Get Injected”.

By Chris Brach

Experience is everything in the music business. And when you can multiply this experience by bringing together musicians who have seen the road, industry, and life from different perspectives, the results are often times an incredible collaboration that couldn’t be created inside the box of a band that has gone from start to finish together. After one listen, this perfectly sums up Lotus Crush and the ten track album, “Half Light Morning”, that releases Tuesday, March 1st.

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

By Joey Tayler

Sometimes, when the winter Wisconsin sky is just a little too gray, and the cold seeps through three layers of clothing before my boot hits the sidewalk, and the two-block walk to my car chills like camping at Valley Forge, I’ll cue up “Pet Sounds” on the iPod just to remember summer, just to remind myself that there are riverfront patios and Pilsners and Cubs games at Miller Park at the end of this godforsaken brrr.

“Great Vacation!” exclaims Sleeping in the Aviary’s third album from its Ralph Steadman beach postcard cover, released, of all months, in frigid November. You might use the latest from Madison’s favorite Minneapolins the same way I use “Pet Sounds,” provided that you spent your summer accidentally killing your lover with a ball gag or drowning on a cruise ship......

Click here to continue reading our review of "Great Vacation!"

It’s hard to believe that it has been a full year since we introduced Rocksposure.com to the world, but our first birthday is upon us (We’ll give you an address to send our gifts to later). While I expected to get interest from many of the aspiring bands around the country, I never guessed how far reaching our simple site would get in the first year of it’s existence. Almost 50 bands are a part of the Rocksposure family, and every one of them brings a unique sound that has attracted followers to our site and radio station.

In one short year the pages of Rocksposure.com have been viewed over 21,000 times by over 7,000 visitors. A truly astounding number of hits for a new site in a genre that is flooded with other options. We’ve seen hits from all 50 states, Canada, numerous countries in Europe, and a handful of other locations from around the globe. We’ve even attracted a few artists from the U.K. But we’re not stopping there, in fact we’re just getting started.....

Click to read the full Article

Almost one year and 50 bands ago, Rocksposure.com hit the web and cranked it up to 11 for all of the talented bands that were out there trying to live their dream. The response has been nothing short of incredible. But before we could even start to think about celebrating our first birthday, we have to take on the daunting task of deciding which band was our Rocksposure.com Artist of the Year.

There are a lot of factors to consider, and we will be looking at everything from how many hits their page had to the number of times their music was requested on Rocksposure Radio. But without question, the loyal fans that read Rocksposure and follow these bands need to have a voice as well. That is why we have opened up the voting to find out who you think we should name the Artist of the Year.

Article by Joey Tayler
Photography by Kristy Kramer

When monsoon season drowned out the Wildbirds’ Milwaukee Boat Line EP-release party last month, the band tempted fate by rescheduling for a Friday the 13th. On cue, fate started grumbling as we approached the Milwaukee River docks, but it couldn’t muster more than a fussy sprinkle. Nobody seemed happier that the clouds parted than the Wildbirds...

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

August Artist of the Month: The Wildbirds

Nicholas Stuart and Hugh Masterson know something about the old gypsy curse.

2008: The Wildbirds fulfill the promise of coast-to-coast wowing and a big label deal with “Golden Daze,” which belongs on any shortlist of the best Milwaukee albums. Steven Van Zandt features “Suzanna” on one of his “Underground Garage” compilations. ESPN plays “421” during X Games promos. The band gives an old bus one of those Willie Nelson biofuel makeovers and heads West for more shows, more fans, more record sales, and maybe some road trip anecdotes to build album number 2 around.

And it’s at just that moment -- that big moment every band dreams about from the second they clear mom and dad’s car out of the garage for their first practice -- that the Wildbirds fell apart. Tensions and tour stress simmered. Two thousand miles passed like two million. The bus broke. The label went broke. The band went broke, played its shows, and then broke up.

Be careful what you wish for....

Read the full review on Rocksposure.com

By Joey Tayler

The music just didn't sound a good as I thought it should.

First thing's first: I unplugged everything, wiped down all the connections with electronics cleaner, plugged everything back in good and tight ... Ehh, a little better maybe. I clicked around a couple A/V forums looking for advice, and a consensus began to emerge. So I headed down to Jo-Ann Fabrics and bought some cork sheets and foam board --

Yeah, the craft store.
Icarus Himself
Review: "Mexico" EP & show at The Frequency in Madison, WI

By Joey Tayler

Before the release party for Icarus Himself's excellent new EP, "Mexico," I thought you could put Led Zeppelin behind singer/songwriter Nick Whetro and his songs would still shrink from any pretense of grandeur. "All my life I've been digging holes ... Sometimes I say terrible things that I know," Whetro sings on EP opener "Digging Holes," which is a pretty good metaphor for how Whetro works musically. He's a burrower, not an excavator, not a builder of castles in the sky. Show him a picture of a happy family, he'll eyeball the faded scar on the little girl's knee and scratch at it until a subcutaneous 2-minute dirge wafts out.......

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

By Chris Brach

Rock music out of California is generally synonymous with warm weather, fast cars, and a certain "Appetite for Destruction" that only 'The Golden State' can provide. But there is an exception to every rule, and the Mainland are this exception. Based out of Yuba City, The Mainland released their debut EP "Last Call" in 2009 and while success has begun to follow them, they don't necessarily fit the California mold.

Click to continue reading the full review on Rocksposure.com

ALBUM REVIEW:
Icarus Himself - "Coffins"

By Joey Tayler

"Oh, how you're heart's on your sleeve," muses Nick Whetro over some harmless acoustic strumming on album-opener "Pigg." Sounds like a good thing, right?

Not so much. A menacing twang drifts in and darkens Whetro's mood until that heart "looks like a piece of dead meat."

In other words, "keep it to yourself," an unsettling sentiment coming from that most heart-on-sleeve variety of musician, the folksy troubador. On his full-length debut as Icarus Himself, National Beekeepers Society founder Whetro would prefer all that touchy-feely meat rot out of sight, or, better yet, in a box six feet under.....

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

Album Review: Decibully - "World Travels Fast"

By Joey Tayler

In late 2008, Decibully's two-years-in-the-making third album, "World Travels Fast," evolved from Milwaukee's own mini-"Chinese Democracy" to Milwaukee's own mini-"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" when Polyvinyl nixed releasing the record and dropped the band. Decibully streamed the album online last December, and fans have spent most of 2009 wondering if, when, and how they'd ever get their paws on it. Now we have the answers: Yes; Today; and Listening Party Records, a vinyl and mp3 label formed by band members Nicolas Sanborn and Andrew Menchal that, one hopes, will not be dropping Decibully any time soon..............

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

BY JOEY TAYLER
Rock writer par excellence and Rocksposure contributor Bryan Wawzenek has or had a theory that may or may not have been published in regards to a band or album that neither of us can remember, except that it probably referenced what a tool Roger Daltrey is.

To wit: Your favorite band is only as good as the lead guitarist. If you wanna be all mathematical about it, the Edge is greater than Bono, Keith is greater than Mick, Page is greater than Plant, and Pete is greater than that tool Roger Daltrey. The pretty boy stroking the mic stand and moaning come-ons to groupies in the front row might be the one on the cover of the Rolling Stone, but in the wee small hours, with the record due next week, he's also probably got a bottle of Jack in one hand and a fake boob in the other while the guitarist is chain-smoking at the sound board, layering in another solo and tweaking the beat so that the singer's slapdash poetry about Jack and boobs sounds a little less stupid....Continued at Rocksposure.com

REVIEW: "Logos" by Atlas Sound
By Joey Tayler

It starts, as always, with Bradford Cox sounding lost, wandering through leaky sink distortion and disembodied voices towards an acoustic guitar lullaby on "The Light That Failed."

By Joey Tayler

Made in Milwaukee wants you to think Milwaukee is cool. And if, like me, you already think Milwaukee is plenty cool, Made in Milwaukee wants you think Milwaukee is even cooler than that. Halloween, a ten dollar cover, and $3 PBR Tall Boys brought out a younger, more enthusiastic downtown crowd than the bored cocktail sippers who yawned with me through last November's MIM bash, a dull menagerie of faux-hipness that staged a succession of mediocre hip-hop acts around art displays and a vintage runway show.

Read the full article at Rocksposure.com

Rocksposure.com's First Featured Artist of the Month:

Sleeping in the Aviary

You go to a live show to get up close and personal with a band, because even nosebleed seats at the United Center are nearer to the music than your stereo or iPod. Maybe you want to share an intimate conversation with your favorite singer-songwriter. Maybe you want to get buzzed off screaming guitars rattling your ear drums. Maybe you want to sing-a-long to that ballad you loved when you were fifteen with a packed house, and feel strangers connect with each other through the beauteous harmony of a shared song.

Or maybe you walk into a Milwaukee bar at 8 PM on Labor Day ... and you're the only one there.
