By Joey Tayler

The music just didn't sound a good as I thought it should.

First thing's first: I unplugged everything, wiped down all the connections with electronics cleaner, plugged everything back in good and tight ... Ehh, a little better maybe. I clicked around a couple A/V forums looking for advice, and a consensus began to emerge. So I headed down to Jo-Ann Fabrics and bought some cork sheets and foam board --

Yeah, the craft store. You mean you've never made a custom platter mat for your turntable?

Turntable. "Turn-table." Well what else am I supposed to play my records on?

"Re-cords." You know, vinyl?

Click to read the full article on Rocksposure.com

Icarus Himself
Review: "Mexico" EP & show at The Frequency in Madison, WI

By Joey Tayler

Before the release party for Icarus Himself's excellent new EP, "Mexico," I thought you could put Led Zeppelin behind singer/songwriter Nick Whetro and his songs would still shrink from any pretense of grandeur. "All my life I've been digging holes ... Sometimes I say terrible things that I know," Whetro sings on EP opener "Digging Holes," which is a pretty good metaphor for how Whetro works musically. He's a burrower, not an excavator, not a builder of castles in the sky. Show him a picture of a happy family, he'll eyeball the faded scar on the little girl's knee and scratch at it until a subcutaneous 2-minute dirge wafts out.......

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

The Constant - The Constant EP

'The City that Never Sleeps' is home to The Constant, a four piece band that proudly embraces their 90's music roots. The band started with lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Steven Baggs following some success in NYC after winning a song writing competition. After getting several interviews and opportunities with local NYC rock stations, Steven began to hand pick the band that would help him take his music to the next level.

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

Album Review: The Mainland - "Last Call"

By Chris Brach

Rock music out of California is generally synonymous with warm weather, fast cars, and a certain "Appetite for Destruction" that only 'The Golden State' can provide. But there is an exception to every rule, and the Mainland are this exception. Based out of Yuba City, The Mainland released their debut EP "Last Call" in 2009 and while success has begun to follow them, they don't necessarily fit the California mold.

Click to continue reading the full review on Rocksposure.com

ALBUM REVIEW:
Icarus Himself - "Coffins"

By Joey Tayler

"Oh, how you're heart's on your sleeve," muses Nick Whetro over some harmless acoustic strumming on album-opener "Pigg." Sounds like a good thing, right?

Not so much. A menacing twang drifts in and darkens Whetro's mood until that heart "looks like a piece of dead meat."

In other words, "keep it to yourself," an unsettling sentiment coming from that most heart-on-sleeve variety of musician, the folksy troubador. On his full-length debut as Icarus Himself, National Beekeepers Society founder Whetro would prefer all that touchy-feely meat rot out of sight, or, better yet, in a box six feet under.....

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

Album Review: Decibully - "World Travels Fast"

By Joey Tayler

In late 2008, Decibully's two-years-in-the-making third album, "World Travels Fast," evolved from Milwaukee's own mini-"Chinese Democracy" to Milwaukee's own mini-"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" when Polyvinyl nixed releasing the record and dropped the band. Decibully streamed the album online last December, and fans have spent most of 2009 wondering if, when, and how they'd ever get their paws on it. Now we have the answers: Yes; Today; and Listening Party Records, a vinyl and mp3 label formed by band members Nicolas Sanborn and Andrew Menchal that, one hopes, will not be dropping Decibully any time soon..............

Read the full review at Rocksposure.com

BY JOEY TAYLER
Rock writer par excellence and Rocksposure contributor Bryan Wawzenek has or had a theory that may or may not have been published in regards to a band or album that neither of us can remember, except that it probably referenced what a tool Roger Daltrey is.

To wit: Your favorite band is only as good as the lead guitarist. If you wanna be all mathematical about it, the Edge is greater than Bono, Keith is greater than Mick, Page is greater than Plant, and Pete is greater than that tool Roger Daltrey. The pretty boy stroking the mic stand and moaning come-ons to groupies in the front row might be the one on the cover of the Rolling Stone, but in the wee small hours, with the record due next week, he's also probably got a bottle of Jack in one hand and a fake boob in the other while the guitarist is chain-smoking at the sound board, layering in another solo and tweaking the beat so that the singer's slapdash poetry about Jack and boobs sounds a little less stupid....Continued at Rocksposure.com

And if, like me, you already think Milwaukee is plenty cool, Made in Milwaukee wants you think Milwaukee is even cooler than that. Halloween, a ten dollar cover, and $3 PBR Tall Boys brought out a younger, more enthusiastic downtown crowd than the bored cocktail sippers who yawned with me through last November's MIM bash, a dull menagerie of faux-hipness that staged a succession of mediocre hip-hop acts around art displays and a vintage runway show.

Read the full article at Rocksposure.com

By Joey Tayler

Look, it's October, and we're just launching, so no, we don't have a back catalog of reviews covering every album ever made. So when we're not writing up the latest bands and their new releases, the Rocksposure crew will start filling in those blanks with reviews of the records that mattered to us in the past 300 odd days.

Starting with ........"Album" by Girls

That's what it's called -- "Album". Not self-titled. "Album".

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Sleeping in the Aviary

Rocksposure.com's First Featured Artist of the Month:

Sleeping in the Aviary

You go to a live show to get up close and personal with a band, because even nosebleed seats at the United Center are nearer to the music than your stereo or iPod. Maybe you want to share an intimate conversation with your favorite singer-songwriter. Maybe you want to get buzzed off screaming guitars rattling your ear drums. Maybe you want to sing-a-long to that ballad you loved when you were fifteen with a packed house, and feel strangers connect with each other through the beauteous harmony of a shared song.

Or maybe you walk into a Milwaukee bar at 8 PM on Labor Day ... and you're the only one there.
